Sunday Times' rave review of Vassaltis Assyrtiko

Sunday Times Wine Columnist Will Lyons' rave review of Vassaltis Assyrtiko - Wimbledon Wine Cellar

Will Lyons - Sunday Times 29th April 2018

“Greek winemaking has regained its heroic status”.

"In 2010, Yiannis Valambous switched from London finance to making wine on his family's land on Santorini. Lucky for us his barrel aged Assyrtiko is world class. There are gentle aromas of wet stone and lemon peel, yet with an underlying freshness."

"The barrel aged Assyrtiko from Vassaltis is one of the finest Greek wines I have ever tasted. It wouldn't seem out of place among its more venerable European cousins."

At Wimbledon Wine Cellar we have always had a knack of choosing winners. From the great white wines of the Côte d'Or, we have helped super growers such as Hubert Lamy and Patrick Javillier find fame and fortune in the UK. We turned our attention to Greece several years ago where we shunned approaches from large commercial houses who wanted our assistance in selling their wines to pursue our usual goal of shipping simply the best that Greece has to offer.

When Yiannis Valambous came to us looking for an importer in the UK we knew that we had found simply the best that Greece has to offer. After just three commercial vintages at the estate, he and his team have done more for Greek wine than most of Greece's wineries put together. His wines are truly excellent and unique. If they were from Burgundy they could easily achieve double the price.

Today, we are offering for immediate delivery his barrel aged Assyrtiko and his gorgeous 2017 stainless steel Assyrtiko. This wine is drinking well now and is perfect for summer drinking on the terrace. For seafood salads, pasta and long summer afternoons it really doesn't get much better, whilst the barrel aged is a snapshot of  a Burgundy dream from Santorini.
